Surya Namascar to the New Year
Surya Namascar Workshop to welcome in the new Year 9/01/27
Surya Namasascar begins all of the Ashtanga sequences and are the backbone of the practice. All of the linking vinyasa sequences are based on the sun salutations.
And you thought they were just a warm up !!
Well, they do make a good warm up and they are a good gauge of how you might be feeling on any given day, but they are much more than this.
Most modern yoga practices have a variation of the Sun salutation, But originally it wasn’t anything to do with asana.
Surya Namascar welcomes the sun. Humankind over the millennia recognised that the sun gives us light and heat and is what keeps the planet alive, without the sun we cannot grow plants for food, shade and shelter.
So from ancient times humans have given gratitude to the sun for rising every day.
This workshop looks at a brief history of the sun salutation, from it’s ancient roots as a mantra through to it’s modern use at the start of a yoga practice.
We will practice Mantra as gratitude to the sun for rising every day and for the new year, and what it will bring.
We will practice a couple of short sun salutation variations, simple movements that flow together and can be used to start the day.
Then we will practice the Ashtanga Surya Namascar, noticing the difference and how correct alignment makes these simple postures a safe way to build strength and stability in your practice.
We will break down the individual postures that make up the two sun salutations. We will look at correct alignment and how to manage the postures to ensure longevity of practice. There are about 75 linking vinyasas in the primary series so it is important to get the alignment right.
Then we will take a look at Surya Namascar A, concentrating on each of the postures in turn, looking at correct alignment, the vinyasa count, and technique for jumping back and floating forwards. Then we will do the same for Surya Namascar B, and from this we can see how the sun salutation forms the basis of the warrior sequence at the end of the standing postures. In fact both sun salutations involve techniques that will help with many of the postures that come throughout the primary series.
We will finish the workshop with a shortened version of the primary series practice, incorporating all that we have learned into the vinyasas in between the postures.
So there really is a lot more to these beginning postures than just warming up!
This workshop is suitable for all levels of practitioner from complete beginner to advanced practitioners.
Modifications will be given.
